A new eye phenotype in Drosophila melanogaster expressed only at temperatures above 25 degrees C.

چکیده
F L I E S expressing a new eye abnormality (scarp, see below) were observed during the summer of 1960 in a "wild" Cockaponsett stock. A review of environmental conditions showed that the temperature had risen to 30°C on each of several days before the abnormal eyes were detected. Some of the abnormalities resembled certain expressions of known mutants such as Lobe eyes and tumorous head. Lobe eyes are reduced and flattened anteriorly, whereas the new abnormal eye usually is not reduced, but it flattened ventrally. The tumorous head phenotype is characterized by abnormal growths throughout the entire head region, but the new abnormality is almost entirely restricted to the eyes. The present study was undertaken to determine whether the new abnormality was inherited and to determine the effects of temperature upon its expression.

Toxicological Evaluation of a New Lepidopteran Insecticide, Flubendiamide, in Non-Target Drosophila melanogaster Meigen (Diptera: Drosophilidae)
Background: Flubendiamide, comparatively a new pesticide designed to eradicate lepidopteran insect pests is known to have low risk to birds, mammals, fish, algae, honey bees, non-target arthropods, earthworms, soil macro- and micro-organisms, non-target plants as well as sewage treatment organisms; however, the risk assessment for aquatic invertebrates from metabolite could not be finalized wit...
متن کاملLaboratory selection at different temperatures modifies heat-shock transcription factor (HSF) activation in Drosophila melanogaster.
The magnitude and time course of activation of the heat-shock transcription factor (HSF) differ among Drosophila melanogaster lines evolving at 18 degrees C, 25 degrees C or 28 degrees C for more than 20 years. At lower heat-shock temperatures (27-35 degrees C), flies from the 18 degrees C population had higher levels of activated HSF (as detected by an electrophoretic mobility shift assay) tha...
متن کاملHeat shock protein synthesis and thermotolerance in Cataglyphis, an ant from the Sahara desert.
The ant Cataglyphis lives in the Sahara desert and is one of the most thermotolerant land animals known. It forages at body temperatures above 50 degrees C, and the critical thermal maxima are at 53.6 +/- 0.8 degrees C for Cataglyphis bombycina and 55.1 +/- 1.1 degrees C for Cataglyphis bicolor. The synthesis and accumulation of heat shock proteins (HSPs) were analyzed in Cataglyphis and compar...
متن کاملParental and developmental temperature effects on the thermal dependence of fitness in Drosophila melanogaster.
Cross-generational effects refer to nongenetic influences of the parental phenotype or environment on offspring phenotypes. Such effects are commonly observed, but their adaptive significance is largely unresolved. We examined cross-generational effects of parental temperature on offspring fitness (estimated via a serial-transfer assay) at different temperatures in a laboratory population of Dr...
متن کاملA comparison of Hsp70 expression and thermotolerance in adults and larvae of three Drosophila species.
Heat shock proteins (Hsps) and other molecular chaperones perform diverse physiological roles. One is to facilitate, in part, organismal thermotolerance, of which the functional consequences depend on Hsp70 concentration and developmental stage in Drosophila melanogaster. To test whether an Hsp70-thermotolerance relationship is a general phenomenon within Drosophila, I assayed Hsp70 concentrati...
